Researching about Target audiences

1. When your audience are not spending time with the focus of this brief.....

What else do they do?

7–11-year-olds: go to school, play an instrument, do sports, see friends and eat.

Where do they work/study?

They study at primary school

What do they read? Blogs, books, magazines, etc.

They like to read books and comics with vibrance and elaborated visuals that grab their attention.

Where do they buy food?

Supermarkets/food market sand at school they may have school dinners/meals.

Where do they buy clothes?

Superstores and clothe shops. High streets.

Where do they go on holidays?

Every where.

What restaurants do they go to?

All the restaurants which children like.

Where do they get their news?

By conversation. By TV, By internet.

What kind of technology do they keep fit?

After school clubs/ Games with friends/ other sport activities/ perhaps they have a pet they like to walk and play with

2. In relation to your audience and the brief you are working on, how does the audience connect with the theme? e.g. via apps/products? What do all these environments look like and how do they work?

The theme is music, orchestras and more specifically still, Jazz. This era was known as a soulful time and a vibrant music genre. Children are not boring characters; they have quirky natures and soul so these two can play to each other pretty nicely. Most children who take an interest in Orchestra will have musical parents or the children will be into music themselves and will want to learn more or will see the book as a fun one to read and look at.

3. How does your audience respond best to these platforms? Think about Tone - serious/light-hearted? Volume - how much stuff compared to blank space? Volume - how many posts a day?

Books to most children, especially of the 7-11 age bracket where they are at their most inquisitive, will find big books overwhelming and the idea of them boring. Use of well thought about color with a bit of vibrance is also key, not garish colors but something with a bit of a kick so as to grab the attention of the young.Having blank space around the text is vital for the child to be able to engage with the text and be able to read it clearly, however on the opposing page it’s good to have enough visual so it looks interesting and keeps their attention.

4. Where you are looking at examples of your audience using platforms like Instagram or Twitter, What are the recommended other brands or people to follow when you look at the profile of your sample audience? How can you use the algorithms these platforms use to further your research?

I would like to say key people to follow would be other publishers who have a similar target audience like penguin random house and Albury books. I have also looked at the profiles of illustrators who have worked for NoBrow to study and observe their styles and how they vary.

Technology

No technical printing due to lack of space and facilities. Digital (photoshop/Procreate)

Covid pandemic –who can afford the book/ who has access to it may be impacted.-How it’s distributed may also be impacted, with economic barriers currently.

Children becoming ever more exposed the digital software’s and technology, may impact the traditional formats interaction

7. Are there public collections, museums or resources dedicated to this? Find images and information.

The MoMA did a Jazz Score exhibition in 2008 which is still online to view to this day. There are many museums and galleries that are dedicated to Jazz in America as the origin country for example the ‘American Jazz Museum’ in Kansas City, Missouri and the ‘Louis Armstrong House Museum’ in New York.

8. How do these places usually show objects/tell stories?

The American museums like the American Jazz museum seem to showcase the jazz style literally and have bright signs and logos to suit its vibrance.

9. What were these paces during the pandemic when they couldn't take in physical visitors?

The American Jazz Museum doesn’t look like it’s been affected and are still offering tickets to people to visit. The National Jazz Archive is a really good resource to access resources on the story of jazz in the UK. So people probably found sites like this very useful.
